Topic:

Podcasts and Backups

Presenter:
Jerry Gifford, CMoM Ambassador
What:

Podcasts (Netcasts)
What is a podcast? Do I need an iPod to access and use podcasts? Where can podcasts be found? What subjects are found as podcasts? How do I listen to or view podcasts? How much does it cost? These are a few of the questions I will attempt to answer. I will discuss and demonstrate finding and using podcasts, both audio and video. I will demonstrate how you can transfer or sync podcasts to your iPod or iPhone for mobile listening/viewing.

Click Podcasts Keynote.key to download a 29 MB slide show which Jerry has prepared that contains a huge amount of detailed information.

NOTE: If using Firefox, click the mouse right button or Control-click to download and save this document into your computer.

Backup strategy
As time allows, I will demonstrate some simple, inexpensive hardware which can be used in conjunction with Mac's Finder and/or an inexpensive software application to back up your important computer data. If there is interest, networked attached storage (NAS) may be discussed briefly.

What:

The Google search engine is a great tool for folks who are trying to mine the massive amount of data that is rapidly being made available to people the world over on the Internet. Since Google is so simple to use, we have a tendency to just use it without thinking.

This session will present the basics of Google search methods. Since the basic search syntax is similar in other Google products, we will be able to review some of them, as they apply to our research. We will sign on to the Internet and do live searches, demonstrating the methods being discussed. We will be touching on Google, Google Books, Google Earth, Google Maps, Google News, as time permits.

CMoM bus to MacWorld Expo & meeting upon return

Presenter:
CMoM members who purchased or just perused techie things at the Moscone Center
When:
Friday, February 12, 2010 at 6:30 p.m (or earlier for pizza!)
What:

CMoM has arranged a bus trip for members and friends to attend Macworld Expo at Moscone Center in San Francisco on February 12, 2010.  As this is a Friday, our usual CMoM general meeting will be held after we get back.

Cost is $25 for members; $45 for nonmembers, for transportation only. Reduced cost admissions may be available online direct from Macworld. For reservations/info on bus trip, contact: CMoMAmb@mac.com ASAP.

For more general information, visit: http://www.macworldexpo.com

As of the date this is posted, there are seats available.

We need to have all the signups and money in hand ASAP.

Make your reservations for the 24-passenger bus by email to our MacWorld bus chairman, Jerry Gifford, CMoMAmb@mac.com (Please use "Macworld Bus" in the subject line.)

Send your check to Club Mac of Monterey at P.O. Box 2107, Monterey, CA 93942.

The take off and landing spot for the MacBus will be at the Ord Military Community (Old Fort Ord).

See details and map below!

The bus should arrive onsite by 7:45 AM.

We will leave at 8 AM sharp!!  The time of our arrival back in Marina is dependent on the effects of traffic on the way home from SF. We will leave San Francisco sometime between 2:45 and 3:00 PM.  We expect to arrive home  between 5:00--5:15 PM.

As this is a Friday, our usual CMoM general meeting will be held after we get back.   However, a "dinner meeting" will  begin earlier than usual, between 5:45--6:00 PM with hot pizza and cold beverages for all members, especially the travelers on the bus. Our regular CMoM general meeting will begin early at 6:30 PM with Q&A and sharing what we saw and learned in San Francisco.

Other trip details and advice for the day will be emailed to all who purchase a seat on the bus.

Given the cost of gas and parking in SF, the price of $25 for club members and $45 for guests is quite reasonable. If you are not currently a member and would like to participate this would be a good time to join (membership is only $20 for the year).

You should get a free FREE Expo ticket as soon as possible.  We do not know how long such offers will stand. Please let us know if you find another source.  https://register.rcsreg.com/regos-1.0/macsf2010/ga/index4.html?fvhf_email_blast=T&pri=Poll
